One of the few luminaries of the 'Neapolitan School' to actually be born in Naples, Porpora wrote L'Angelica, a serenade for six voices and instruments, to a libretto by the young Pietro Metastasio in 1720. The work was composed for the birthday of Empress Elizabeth Christine, wife of Charles VI, and it's plot is comedic, focusing on the travails of a couple in love. Ten Holts's composition method was interesting in it's theoretical approach, a work was first conceived in it's totality, similar to the formalism movement in the visual arts, and was then later translated to paper. In the 1970s Ten Holt abandoned this method and returned to composing at the piano. It was in this period, after years of work, his most popular composition Canto Ostinato was completed. To describe Schubert's pieces for several male or female voices as choral songs is not entirely accurate, however, since at the time they were usually sung by soloists. However, amateur choirs such as the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna already existed and held regular concerts, and Schubert's polyphonic songs thus often came to the attention of a wider public more quickly than his solo songs performed in private circles. Society music had thus taken the step into the concert hall, and Schubert's name first appeared on a program of the Musikfreunde on January 25, 1821. Some of the composer's best-known songs for men's or women's choir with piano are collected in this SCHUBERTIADE, including the gently swaying barcarole Der Gondelfahrer, in which Schubert evokes the glitter of moonlight on the Venetian canals, or the St?ndchen, which was written as a birthday serenade. One of his five settings of Mignon's Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt from Goethe's Wilhelm Meister was written for five-part male choir - a special feature here among his polyphonic songs is that Mignon's tormented soul is expressed through a differentiated harmony and refined treatment of the text. Which is why, save for live performance, the often inimitable new-music originating in, or in proximity to, Iceland (homeland to an unreasonable percentage of the composers living rent-free in my headphones for more than a decade) has found it's most ardent advocate and most clarion amplifier in Winchester, Virginia. Certainly it's exceptional national orchestra has. Despite a bewildering insistence by journalists to characterize music written by those with Icelandic surnames as a monolith, the entries on this tracklist are as singular as hand blown glass. The inclusion of American sonic clairvoyant Missy Mazzoli is a helpful geographic foil here, but there is one element fusing all of these inventions: Your person is about to feel minuscule or massive, by contrast to - or motivated by - these sounds. Anna Thorvaldsdottir's music is often intimidatingly cyclopean, and Catamorphosis at times mimics the cosmic indifference of Lovecraft-ian deities, but it simultaneously introduces an iridescent hope I have not encountered before in her music. Mazzoli's Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres) catapults us from one end of a pulsing solar system to the other while Dan?el Bjarnason's From Space I Saw Earth improbably stretches perspective from earth to the moon and back, seeming somehow both terrestrial and paranormal within a single phrase. Maria Huld Markan Sigf?sd?ttir's Clockworking for Orchestra bridges a similar expanse, coexisting within the measurable realm of time-keeping... and the immeasurable realm of what occurs as the seconds tick by.
