When lockdown was imposed in 2020 many artists began streaming performances from their own homes. In response, pianist Francesco Piemontesi and director Jan Schmidt-Garre launched a concert series to showcase artists living in Berlin, given in the renowned Schinkel Pavillon with an expert technical team assembled at short notice. Fourteen concerts were held, without audiences, under the name Home Music Berlin featuring some of the world's leading instrumentalists and singers. Giuseppi Verdi's Messa da Requiem arose out of the composer's admiration for the influential poet and novelist Alessandro Manzoni, and as a response to the lack of appreciation shown to the writer in the press after the his death in 1873. The extraordinary character of Verdi's Requiem confronts us with unanswerable questions, from the stormy and terrifying Dies irae, to consolatory and touching lyrical oases in which Verdi communicates liturgical texts in the most profound and expressive ways possible. This Teatro Regio di Parma production, which was performed open-air at the Parco Ducale of Parma, was dedicated to the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic and all the health workers engaged in the emergency. The mayor of Parma introduces the performance with a brief and touching speech and a minute's silence. Conductor Roberto Abbado declared in an interview : I think that Verdi felt the need to compose a sacred work to deal with some themes that, as he got older, he felt very strongly about. They are themes that every human being sooner or later asks themselves. Verdi is not afraid to show that he fears death, and therefore his approach is extremely humble and human, showing... some of the frailties we all have. How does the Messa da Requiem end? Franz Schubert's Winterreise, a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano set to poems by Wilhelm M?ller, is not only regarded as the zenith of Schubert's song composition, but as the pinnacle of German art song in it's entirety. German composer Hans Zender arranged the cycle in 1993 with the title: Schubert's 'Winterreise' - a composed interpretation. Zender's version for tenor and chamber orchestra reveals the cycle's potential to disturb, and approaches Wilhelm M?ller's poems in it's own way. Zender pushes into the darkest regions of human existence. With his interpretation, he brings to light emotions that pulsate just beneath the surface in Schubert's work, uncovering the uncanny layers in the depths of the music. Like Hans Zender, Christian Spuck's production, which was awarded the renowned Prix Benois de la Danse in 2019, concerns itself less with illustrating the external stations of the traveler's journey. Instead, it approaches the cycle with thoroughly comprehensive abstraction. Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos is one of the early 20th century's most peculiar operatic works. It's narrative derives from the famous myth of Ariadne, who is abandoned by Theseus on the island of Naxos and eventually falls in love with the god Bacchus. This opera is, however, preceded by an extensive modern prologue in which a young Composer finds himself tortured by egotistical artists complicating preparations for the opera's production in an eternal struggle between comedy and high art. Listeners of all ages will find in this recital a lively and absorbing array of pieces, arranged in much the same spirit as in Volume 1. A sequence of smaller pieces (bagatelles mostly) prepares the way for the larger, more complex, sonata movements. Among these is the opening movement of the Moonlight sonata, whose fateful and instantly recognizable triplet figure exerts it's hypnotic power throughout a quite long journey. Although Mozart's five violin concertos represent only a very small part of his creative work (when compared to the 27 piano concertos and the 41 symphonies), they nevertheless belong to the core repertoire of all violinists. Wagner sourced material for his national legend Der Ring des Nibelungen in medieval German and Scandinavian sagas, though much was his own invention. Das Rheingold is the prologue to this tetralogy of music dramas. It introduces the principal events in this visionary work, the theft by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich of the ring made from Rhine gold, and it's seizure by Wotan, ruler of the Gods. This production was recorded in 2010 at the Sofia Opera and Ballet theatre as the first title of the complete Wagner cycle that we will be releasing entirely in separate titles.
